Russia - Sweden ( Eurobasket 2013 )

russia sweden 2013 eurobasket picks and predictions
In group D, nothing is settled yet for Russia. Turkey lost its both games and probably eliminated, so is Sweden. However, the first two games Russia played were in fact the toughest ones of the group. So, losing both of them isn't really a big deal for them. Now, Russia is one day rested and has 3 games in a row. In case they do win all of them which they could, they could find themselves qualifying for the second round. The first of those opponents is Sweden today.

Sweden is obvious weakest link of this group. The only opponent they could defeat is perhaps Turkey. ( Actually, I'm pretty curious about the spread determined when they face Turkey. We'll see ) The team has nothing special except Jonas Jerebko and Jeffrey Taylor. In fact, Swedish team not only lacks of individual quality and creativity but also ability to circulate the ball properly as a team to create open shoots. Because of these factors, their scoring burden lies heavily under the shoulders of Jeffrey Taylor.

Russia didn't play well against Italy at the first game, but they did resist a lot better when they faced Greece two days ago. They still lost the game, though as Greece has probably the best team chemistry so far. Nevertheless, the effort and concentration they put up, especially in the first half of the game were promising. Head coach Vasily Karasev's guys seemed determined to achieve something despite the lack of important names in the rotation such as Andrei Kirilenko, Sasha Kaun, Aleksander Vorontsevich etc. Today, the opponent is relatively easier, so they could start showing some real progress.

I watched Sweden's second game against Finland. They played only the first quarter properly. of 27 points they scored, 20 points were combined by Jerebko & Taylor. Besides them, there was almost no scoring initiative. Sweden did one thing correctly in the first quarter, coming to FT line for easy points. For some reason, they forgot this simple rule in the second quarter, though. The result ? Sweden scored  only 4 points in the second quarter. Russia was decent against Greece especially at the first half. Karasev tightened his rotation ( he used all 12 of his guys against Italy in the previous game ) Even Alexey Shved, who is supposed to be absolute leader of the team, wasn't allowed to step up individually. In conclusion, Russia played like a team properly, circulating the ball around the court and creating open shoots for each other.

I expect Russians to show no mercy. They could easily trail Sweden already in the first half.
