Jon Diebler; The most underrated talent of Turkish Basketball League

Jon Diebler is an american basketball player who currently plays for Pinar Karsiyaka. He is a class of 88' who played four seasons for Ohio State University. He's a holder of Ohio high school career scoring and big ten career three point field goal record of Ohio State University.

Thanks to his father who was the head coach of his high school team, he scored over 3000 points during his high school career. In his senior year, he averaged 41.2 points, 12.3 rebounds and 6 assists per game. After high school years, he started to play for Ohio State University. He finished 2009-2010 season by averaging 37.2 minutes per game. Starting from his sophomore year, he was a regular starter in total 115 games during his time for Ohio State University.

In 2011 Nba draft, he was drafted as 51th overall draft pick by Portland Trail Blazers, but he wasn't offered a contract. Later in august, he decided to head to Europe possibly due to the lockout and he signed a one year contract with Panionios of Greece. His draft rights were traded to Houston Rockets in July, 2012.

After a successful year in Greece, Pinar Karsiyaka Basketball Management which is probably the best organization of Turkish Basketball to scout talents discovered his potential and he was signed by Pinar Karsiyaka on July, 2012.

During the first half of the 2012-2013 Basketball season, Jon Diebler averaged 28 minutes, 12.1 points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.6 assists in the domestic league. More spectacularly, he shot with %46 behind the arc, which makes him an elite shooter. In Fiba Eurochallenge cup, his figures are 24.8 minutes, 10 points, 2.7 rebounds and 0.7 assists per game. It's pretty safe to say he is one of the most underpaid players, too since his contract currently is only worth 150K$/a year.

Jon Diebler comes from a family where pretty much everyone is involved in playing basketball. He's an outstanding shooter and a great player with good court vision and high basketball IQ. He's athletic enough to create open spaces for his shooting skills, but he needs to add some extra pounds to get stronger. As a weakness, he rarely penetrates inside the area to draw fouls in spite of he is a good free throw shooter.

I do personally think that after spending a few successful years in Europe, he could be so handy as a reliable outside shooter, at least off the bench to many NBA teams. I'm pretty sure those in USA who followed him during his NCAA years are well aware of his potential;however, he's much more unknown in Europe, even in the Turkish league. Besides Pinar Karsiyaka fans and hardcore basketball followers, I seriously doubt his abilities are properly appraised by Turkish basketball media and community.

For Pinar Karsiyaka fans, Jon Diebler wasn't a surprise at all, because they were privileged to watch other talents such as Gary Neal and Marcus Slaughter before anyone else in Europe did.

  1. This is a super clip. We in Ohio, and especially graduates of Ohio State, are so proud of Jon. Even though he's far from home, he's often mentioned at OSU games. He is a wonderful example of a midwestern American...not only as a basketball player, but as a person committed to his faith.

  2. I can imagine.
I can't believe how much traffic I received after I wrote this article. My blog just boomed. He's certainly a great player and we're happy to have him here. I hope he stays even longer, but i would be proud of him, too if he makes his way to Rockets at the end of the season.

  3. Tomorrow, he'll be playing on the road in latvia for which there might not be a stream, but next tuesday, there'll definitely a possibility to watch him online through an official stream of a national channel.

Perhaps, I should share it here next week

  5. I notice that this article is again highly visited nowadays. Jon Diebler was injured about 3 weeks ago in his knee. He's likely to be out of action at least 3 more weeks as of today.

Totally unfortunate event as his absence lowered Pinar Karsiyaka's chances a lot both in Eurochallenge cup and in the domestic competition
