Anadolu Efes - Panathinaikos Athens

Anadolu Efes Panathinaikos pick
Anadolu Efes is going to host Greek side Panathinaikos Athens for new year's first match up on thursday evening. Being able to play head to head 28 minutes, Anadolu Efes was overwhelmed by amazing shooting performance of CSKA Moscow in the last quarter and handed in their first defeat of TOP 16 last week. Visiting Panathinaikos managed to achieve a 67-66 victory against Zalgiris Kaunas last week where the biggest credit is devoted to the stunning performance of new signing Jason Kapono.

By a NBA all star looking shooting performance, Anadolu Efes played an amazing first half against CSKA Moscow. A lot of us expected home side CSKA Moscow to dominate the visitors since the first minute;however, Anadolu Efes led by Jordan Farmar prevailed and tied the game 42-42 at the end of first half. Cska Moscow toughened their defense towards the end of 3rd quarter and controlled the game once they took the lead. Since, No one but only Jordan Farmar stepped up for scoring, CSKA achieved a decisive 90-71 victory and obtained their first victory. Jordan Farmar's 24 points couldn't avoid a loss while no one else contributed to scoring in double digits.

Visiting Panathinaikos succeeded to defeat Zalgiris Kaunas in a very exciting game last week. Despite the early injury of starting point guard Dimitris Diamantidis, Panathinaikos was able to confront Zalgiris mainly thanks to the amazing shooting performance of recent signing Jason Kapono. Stephane Lasme and Michael Bramos also scored in double digits to help their team to overcome the absence of Diamantidis. At the end, Greek side achieved a win which might mean a lot to decide their fate for TOP 16 group stage.

Considering the power rankings of group E, it is very unlikely that Anadolu Efes could rise above Neither Real Madrid nor Cska Moscow or Zalgiris Kaunas. From the realistic point of view, they could possibly compete for the last seed for qualification to TOP 8. To reach to the quarter finals, Panathinaikos and Unicaja Malaga, especially Panathinaikos, are the teams which Anadolu Efes needs absolutely to dominate. This nature of the group makes this match up vital for Anadolu Efes squad.(I'm pretty sure that similar calculations are made by coaching staff, too) Panathinaikos is coming to Istanbul with a major absence, Dimitris Diamantidis. He is the core of Panathinaikos offensive sets. His unexpected injury brings great advantage to Anadolu Efes. Besides, James Gist and Jason Kapono are quite recent additions. I think they migh still need time to be fully part of Panathinaikos rotation.( Not disregarding how great shooter Jason Kapono is!)

Although their performance hasn't been  as sustainable as it should have been, Anadolu Efes rotation has the quality to scare opponents, particulary at home. They indeed proved it against Olympiakos right after being humiliated by Emporio Armani Milano, which is already eliminated. By a similar motivation and the requirements for such qualification plans, I think Anadolu Efes shouldn't take its chances, especially when they catch an opponent with a tightened rotation. The spread is 4.5 poings in bet365, but i found one point advantage in marathonbet, so i'll take that one instead. I'm pretty sure that spread will rise, so it is better to rush.

One quick remark; Panathinaikos lost a game 73-64 against Fenerbahce Ulker in Istanbul on November, 1st.

Pick: Anadolu Efes -3.5 @ 1.94
Stake: 10/10

Good luck and happy betting!

Just as expected, Panathinaikos was unable to compete enough without Diamantidis
