Fenerbahce - Besiktas

Two Euroleague participants face each other in Fenerbahce Ulker Arena tonight. After last week's game between Anadolu Efes and Galatasaray Medical Park, this is the second rival game of Turkish basketball league so far. Both teams have newly built, coached by new trainers and have serious support of fans behind them, therefore it is no surprise that this is going to be the game of the week for Turkish league.

Fenerbahce Ulker established a squad which not only aims to reach final four in Euroleague, but also to obtain the title within Turkish basketball league. Considerin the amount of money spent to sign players, I think they aren't day dreaming. They have everything in house to be successful in both scenes. The only question is whether or not coach Pianigiani could create the team chemistry that will turn this potential into results.

Besiktas, on the other hand, faces financial problems after a faboulous season when they won all the competitions they participated. A group of players is established with a limited amount of money and they mostly count on the vision of their coach Kunter who was a legendary captain of Besiktas in the past and who achieved outstanding results recently when he coached Cholet Basket in France. Moreover, Gasper Vidmar and Curtis Jerrels will play against their former team which makes this game particularly interesting for them.

The fate of today's game is entirely dependent on the concentration and will to win of either side rather than their tactical preparations in basketball science. Fenerbahce is 3/4 in euroleague in so far, losing badly against Real Madrid and without a loss in the domestic league so far, defeating all weaker teams in the past 3 match ups. Besiktas is 2/4 in Euroleague, losing against Barcelona and Cska Moscow whose budgets are way over Besiktas'range. They also lost against Pinar Karsiyaka on the road, which shouldn't be taken as a surprising result because Karsiyaka has always been a tough match up on the road for visitors. So, in short, none of those parameters are indicative on the eve of this game.

Playing in the Turkish League is quite a different experience when compared to Euroleague. Teams are allowed to utilize only 3 foreign players simultaneously. Therefore, especially Fenerbahce, whose potential is based more on their foreign stars should alter their rotation, giving more minutes to their Turkish players. Besiktas is more accustomed to this situation as their rotation is already tighter and their team strength is more balanced between foreign and national players. Pianigiani is in his first season in Turkey and this is going to be his first rival game within the league. His in game decisions are also crucial. Erman Kunter, on the other hand, is more experienced trainer, who knows how it feels to be playing such games.

Fenerbahce is determined as favourite nominally by both its squad and its home court advantage. However, It is Besiktas which needs the victory more here. It is definitelly a tough business to guess the final outcome because in such games, the psychological factors usually play just as much  role as statistics. Thus, I expect a close game with some lead changes and come backs involved. Whichever side wins, it won't be decided until very final minutes of match up. The handicap spread is bigger than it should be. I prefer to be on behalf of Besiktas who is more in need of victory here.

Pick : Besiktas +7.5 @ 1.88
